Mr Jonathan Spilsbury
Consultant Orthopaedic Spine Surgeon
Mr Jonathan Spilsbury, Consultant Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon, grew up in the Midlands. He studied Medicine at the Middlesex Hospital in London and qualified in 1987. His first house job, at University College Hospital, included Spinal Surgery and he soon became interested in the spine. His second house job, at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, is where he met his wife, Philippa. An Orthopaedic Registrar rotation at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital was followed by a Senior Registrar rotation in South Wales. A Spinal Fellowship between Cardiff and The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham followed during which a European Travelling Deformity Fellowship confirmed special interest in spinal deformity.
Mr Spilsbury was then appointed in 1998 as Consultant Spinal Surgeon at the Hope Hospital and Manchester Children's Hospital. A transfer back to the Midlands occurred in 2002, to take up a similar post at The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital and Birmingham Children's Hospital. He holds the title Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Birmingham. He is a member of the British Scoliosis Society and regularly attends the Scoliosis Research Society meetings as well as other international deformity meetings. Although trained in all aspects of orthopaedics and trauma, he now concentrates on adult and paediatric spinal deformity, as well as covering spinal emergencies including trauma, infection and spinal tumours.
Outside the hospital, he has hobbies, including classic cars, and amongst other vehicles owns a "Green Goddess" which he shows from time to time. He also enjoys gardening. He has five children, the youngest of whom is still at school.
Mr Spilsbury has quite a busy medico-legal practice, advising on both Claimant and Defendant cases
He also advises on medical negligence cases involving spinal surgery, including both NHSLA and Claimants alike.
