Mr Jwalant Mehta qualified in 1989 and completed his Orthopaedic training in Mumbai with MS (Orth) and a Gold medal in D (Orth) in 1992. He completed the Registrar rotation on the South-East Thames Orthopaedic programme and was a Senior Registrar on the Welsh Programme. He was awarded MCh (Orth) in 1998 from the University of Liverpool and FRCS (Tr & Orth) in 2001.
After accreditation in Trauma & Orthopaedics he undertook fellowships in spinal surgery at the Bristol Orthopaedic Spinal Service and Spinal Reconstruction Fellowship in Columbia,
Missouri, USA for a year each. He was a Consultant Spine Surgeon at the Centre for Spinal Disorders and Surgery, Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham before moving to Swansea to set up a new Spinal Unit there. He was a Consultant Spine Surgeon with the ABMU Health Board, Swansea.
Besides the specialization in the treatment of spinal deformity in children, teenagers, adults and the elderly populations, he also treats degenerative conditions of the cervical and the lumbar spine. He has treated professional and semi-professional football, cricket and rugby players, and has worked closely with the Swans City FC.
He has published papers, co-authored chapters, presented papers to learned societies and lectured at national and international meetings. He is a member of the SRS, BSS, BASS, BOA and ASSI. He is on the Assistant Editorial Board of European Spine Journal, Reviewer for Spine and has served on the several steering committees of the Scoliosis Research Society. He is involved with implant design and in educational and training of Orthopaedic trainees and Spinal Surgeons.
His other interests include photography and he is a keen follower of premier league football and cricket.
